Overnight play in Flushing Meadows, New York, saw the exit of the Liezel Huber / Sania Mirza team at the 2006 US Open, after being overpowered 3-6 6-3 7-5 by the 6th-seeded Kveta Peschke and Francesca Schiavone.
The 11th-seeded South-African/Indian pair shocked the higher-profile team by taking the first set 6-3, before conceding the second set by the same margin.
The Czech-Italian pair made their efforts stick by edging Huber and Mirza 7-5 in the final set to go through to face Zi Yan and Jie Zheng in the quarter-finals.
The 2nd-seed Chinese team will be a tough encounter for Peschke and Schiavone, particularly after they cruised through the third round against unseeded Ashley Harkleroad (USA) and Galina Voskoboeva (RUS) 6-3 6-4.
In the Women’s Singles tournament, top seeds are making the best of a rain-hampered event, with all top four seeds Amelie Mauresmo, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Maria Sharapova and Elena Dementieva taking on lesser-ranked opposition to progress to the Semi-Finals.
