‘I never expected to score so many goals’ – Banyana Captain

Banyana Banyana Captain, Refiloe Jane, grabbed the headlines on Wednesday, 31 July, 2019, after a stellar performance in the 2019 COSAFA Women’s Championship, scoring four goals and named the Player of the Match.

The defending champions opened their account with a 17-0 victory against Comoros Islands in Group A of the regional tournament in Port Elizabeth, and Refiloe Jane, who wore the armband in the absence of Captain Janine Van Wyk, pointed out that they went into their match not underestimating their opponents on the day.

“We went into the game not underestimating the opponents. We didn’t know what to expect because we last played them in 2014, so they might have improved since then,” she told SAFA media after the impressive win.

“It was important for us to get a win so that we start the tournament on a high. Getting a first win at the tournament also eases up on the pressure, so going into our second match we are very confident,” she added.

On her four goals on the day, Jane was amped to have found herself getting onto the scoresheet.

“I never expected to score so many goals, but it was all a team effort. We always try to play for one another, if one can’t score, the next person could be in a better position and it shows also with the number of scorers that we had today (Wednesday, 31 July),” she said.

“It was a good feeling to be selected player of the match. It showed that there was something positive to take out of the match and going into the next match we will keep on trying and working hard for the team,” Jane continued.

Speaking on the next match which will be against Madagascar on Friday, 2 August, 2019, the captain emphasised the importance of having to maintain their performance.

“We are taking one game as it comes. The next match isn’t going to be easy, so looking at the fact that we are playing a different opponent, we are just going to have to focus on what we can do, try to get a win and also try to play our level best, and getting into the next round,” she ended.
