World no.1 Iga Swiatek claimed her fourth consecutive title and 23rd straight match victory as she defeated fourth ranked Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 6-2 at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on Sunday, 24 April 2022.
Swiatek made her Stuttgart tournament debut an unforgettable one by completing her week with an 84 minute win over Sabalenka; the Polish collected her seventh career Hologic WTA tour singles title honour.
She was unstoppable, breaking Sabalenka’s serve twice in the opening set, but Sabalenka toughed out a service hold from break point down at 1-1 in the second set, earning multiple forehand winners down the line. However, Swiatek found perfect placement on her shots down the stretch, grabbing the last four games to finish off the final 6-2, 6-2.
“It was a tough match, we fought hard for every game hopefully there will be many more to come,” explained Swiatek.
Her winning streak began with a title run at WTA1000 DOHA and remained undefeated at the WTA1000 event this year, sweeping through the Sunshine double of the Indian Wells and Miami masters.
The Polish thanked her team for helping her recover in the short time between her semi-final win over the Russian Liudumi Samsonova, which lasted over three hours.
“Thank you for giving me life again,” Swiatek concluded.
The Polish player threw her tennis racquet in the air with joy after her win and held up four fingers for each of her titles in 2022.
She is the first Polish player to win a Grand Slam after her French Open victory in 2020 and her victory in Stuttgart was the seventh title of her career.
