Picture courtesy Touchline.April and May saw the inaugural Golf Digest Women’s Subscriber Challenge regional tournaments taking place at Pecanwood, Selborne and De Zalze, where the top three pairs from each golf day qualified to play in the two-day national finals at the exquisite Arabella Country Club in the Western Cape on May 16 and 17.

The 18 women golfers each won a VIP trip to the finals where they were treated to a great golf course, luxurious accommodation and fine cuisine at the magnificent Arabella Western Cape Hotel & Spa.

The inaugural betterball champions are George golfers Yolandi van der Westhuizen and Helen Hills, two relative beginners, who scored 45 points on day 1 and 44 points on day 2 for a total of 89 points.

Yolandi said the event had been a tremendous success. “Thank you to Golf Digest and especially Marketing Manager Andrew Kalis and all the sponsors for the best golf experience.

“It was luxurious, incredibly beautiful, vibrant and unique in ways that you could never dream of. From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left, an experience of a lifetime.”

Helen Hills agreed: “We entered the challenge just for fun. Yolandi and I gelled as a team and we share the same attitude. The reason for our success, we played well!

“We could still laugh about our bad shots and were very relaxed. As beginners we are tremendously proud of ourselves. All the support back home in George contributed to our success. We now feel like real golfers! Last but not least, a special thanks to our coaches Val Holland and Leigh Middleton.”

Craig Ross, Publisher of Golf Digest concluded: “It is very satisfying to run a tournament of this high standard for our women readers. Golf For Women and the women’s subscriber challenge is a natural extension of our investment, (and the) positive response we have had so far is tremendously encouraging".
