Ishcke Senekal Grabs Gold at CAA Champs

Team South Africa were off to a blistering start at the 2022 CAA Championships as Isckhe Senekal grabbed gold in Mauritius on Wednesday, 8 June 2022.

Senekal had a rocky start, but produced to a winning effort with a throw of 16.40m in the fifth round to successfully defend her women’s shot put title that she won in Asaba, Nigeria in 2008.

She was followed by Carine Mekam of Gabon who took silver with a distance of 15.87m, while Senekal’s teammate Zonica Lindeque grabbed bronze with a distance of 15.79m.

In the women’s 100m final, SA record holder Carina Horn finished third with a World Qualifying time of 11.14s, behind winner Gina Bass of Gambia in 11.06s and Nigeria’s Moumouni Aminatou in 11.09s.

In the women’s 100m hurdles, Marioné Fourie managed a third place finish in the in a time of 12.93s, behind Tobi Amusan of Nigeria and Ebony Leea Morrison of Liberia.

There was no joy in the women’s 1500m event where Carina Viljoen and Danielle Verster finished sixth and ninth, respectively.

In the women’s 5000m race, Caster Semenya and Kyla Jacobs crossed the finished line in sixth (16:0.3.24) and seventh (16:16.06) .

President of Athletics South Africa James Moloi congratulated the medallists saying: “Congratulations to all our medallists for their achievements. We congratulate the coaches and all support staff for the success of the athletics.”
