The final event in the SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge series is just around the corner, and it promises to be a day of fun for all, with thousands of women from all over Gauteng converging on the Old Parktonians Club in Randburg on Sunday October 14 to take the Challenge, or take part in the 5km Fun Run.

Rene Kalmer leads the SPAR Grand Prix series by a massive 32 points (see table below), and doesn’t even need to run the Joburg leg this weekend to qualify for the 2007 crown and the winning prize money, perhaps cause for her to enjoy the distance as much as any of the casual entrants!

The race is all about women – any men who take part have to do so in drag – and the women have a ball, with most of the entrants spending time getting to know the runners or walkers around them.

Prizes at the Challenge include a computer for the school with the most entries, the prize of SPAR vouchers in the Bring a Friend competition, and best of all, the lucky draw prize of a year’s supply of groceries in the form of Spar vouchers worth R12 000.

But the best of all is that Highveld Stereo’s Buli G will be there to entertain the crowds with her own unique style of singing. If you haven’t heard Buli G yet, you are in for a real treat.

She is Eastern Cape through-and-through, and is rapidly becoming one of the best known entertainers in the country, belting out rock numbers to break your heart and the slower songs to keep your toes tapping on race day.

She has performed at the Grahamstown Festival on a number of occasions and last year, she brought the house down at the banquet for the national netball championships, with nearly a thousand netball players stamping their feet and shouting for more.

So prepare for a spectacular day of fun at the SPAR Challenge – and remember, you will be doing your bit to fight the scourge of breast cancer, because the proceeds from the race will be going to breast cancer awareness.

Entry forms are available from all SPAR, SUPERSPAR and KWIKSPAR stores or online at the SPAR website.
