More than 50 of the Western Cape’s rising surf stars have already entered the second annual Kahuna Surf Series designed to foster, encourage and develop contest surfing skills, which starts at Muizenberg Corner this weekend.
Entries are flooding in from as far afield as Melkbosstrand, Betty’s Bay and Kommetjie for the first of the three WP Surfing sanctioned events.
These events provide novice surfers with entry-level surfing competition in which to hone their talent in a relaxed and fun-filled atmosphere, with loads of prizes from the country’s top surf industry companies at stake.
Conceived last year by SA’s country’s highest internationally qualified surf coach Dene Botha to boost the performance of contest surfers in the region, the KSS restricts entry to surfers who have not previously qualified for the finals of a national surfing event, to give all the other local contenders the opportunity to experience the joy and motivation of becoming a winner.
New series champions will crowned in several divisions in December, including last year’s Ashleigh Hart (Kirstenhof) defending her U16 girls title.
The U12 title is vacant this year, as last year’s winner moves to the U14 division, where she is pitted against 2005 champ Alex Morris and double runner-up, Sabrina Scott (Glencairn), which will add a spark to the U14’s, as all three girls now train at the Kahuna Surfing Academy in Kommetjie.
KSS events start at 8am on each day, and every competitor receives a goodies bag containing a Zigzag magazine, Palmers surf wax, stickers and other youth related products.
All seven divisions comprise at least two rounds without elimination, from which the top four contenders qualify for the finals.
Finalists are awarded certificates, and also earn valuable prizes from local and multi-national brands including Island Style, Kustom footwear, Lifestyle Surf Shop, Cobian sandals and Puma Sports.
The KSS champions are crowned after all three events are completed, and are awarded commemorative medals, custom Reef wetsuits, Freestyle watches, Von Zipper eyewear and a three-day hi-performance surf camp with Dene Botha at the Kahuna Surfing Academy.
In order to promote transformation in surfing in the Western Cape, the organisers have invited 10 developing surfers from the Micah Surf Club in Macassar to compete in the first event, and have waived their entry fees.

Entries usually close on the Monday before each event, or once a division is full, and competitors can enter all three events on one entry form.
However, for this first event of the 2006 series, entries will be accepted up until close of business on Friday evening.
