The KZN South Coast is set to sizzle at the end of the month on 27, 28 and 29 October during the fourth annual South Coast Surf Carnival presented by Jeep and The Mercury.
The national longboarding contest and kitesurfing showdown are the anchor events of the festival, which has grown to include development surfing clinics and the family orientated sport of kiteflying.
“Thanks to the UGU Municipality and the Umdoni Coast and Country Tourism Association this event in its fourth year has gone from strength to strength,” commented Paul Godwin, the South Coast Surf Carnival Organiser from Nerve Events.
“This year we are also able to offer a development surfing clinic which will be run by local Scottburgh resident Sean Hague of Point Surf Academy and will be supported by many young surfers from Umzumbe beach as well as locals in the area.
“Nerve Events is proud to be associated with the relaxed and beautiful South Coast of KZN, come and join us and see for your selves why it is the Paradise of the Zulu Kingdom,” said Godwin.
The South Coast Surf Carnival boasts cash prizes, and great product prizes up for grabs for the kitesurfers and longboarders.
The South Coast Surf Carnival Longboarding event is sanctioned by SALSA with an entry fee of R100. Divisions include under 20, open, ladies (all ages), over 40 and over 50.
All entrants automatically go into the draw to win a Clayton longboard. The nation’s top surfers are expected to converge on Scottburgh beach to compete in the first SALSA event on the 2006 calendar.
The great waves and the people of Scottburgh always make it an exciting venue to hold an event,” said 2005 South Coast Surf Carnival Open Longboarding champion, Cape Town’s Michael Grendon.
“Now that SALSA is on board the South Coast Surf Carnival is going to be an even more prestigious event due to it being upgraded to a national contest.
“I think the competition will be even fiercer,” Grenden added, “But I look forward to coming back to defend my title.”
The kitesurfers will be hoping for strong winds to blow over the three day period to allow for spectacular performances from the open, masters, ladies, juniors and novice competitors.
The kitesurfers will have the option of a mobile venue, the contest will take place at Kelso or Scottburgh beach, depending on the conditions on the day.
There will be two disciplines in the kitesurfing event – freestyle and king of the air. Kitesurfing clinics will be open to all members of the public to encourage newcomers to the sport.
For the general public there will be an awesome display of show kites, power kites and displays put on by Hi Fly Kites, and the public can join in for free, bring their own kites, and there will also be kites to purchase at the event.
The South Coast Surf Carnival, presented by Jeep and The Mercury, promises to provide breathtaking kitesurfing action, stylish longboarding performances, promotional give-aways as well as fun clinics and entertainment guaranteed to appeal to the whole family.
The South Coast Surf Carnival is organised and run by Nerve Events. Co-sponsors include Hi Fly Kites, Cyclone Kiteboarding, Ocean 2 Air Kiteboarding, Nestle Pure Life Water, Bavaria, Pick n Pay Scottburgh, Clayton Surfboards and the Point Surf Academy.
