Casric Stars National Liaison Officer Katlego Zwane has over the years built a name for herself as one of South Africa’s trusted Administrators and Media Practitioners. What started as trips to the stadium with her daddy, have culminated in her taking up space in the local football fraternity.

“I started working in tournament established by Casric co-owner, Mr. Bucs Mthombeni for more than 10 years, as an Administrator & Public Relations Officer. I then joined TS Galaxy in 2016/2017 season while they were still in the Vodacom League until 2019/2020, when they were champions of the Nedbank Cup.

“I was helping in all-round duties, assisting the team, I also took over their social media for four seasons. I have contributed so much, they were one of the teams that had a lot of supporters because of my passion and work.”

While we’ve seen an increase in the number of women taking roles as Media Officers and P.R.O’s, the industry is still quite heavily dominated by men. However, despite the gender imbalance behind the scenes of the country’s biggest teams, the likes of Katlego are holding the fort for the ladies.

“In the 2019/2020 season I was also helping the ABC side “Casric Stars” when they went to play in Cape Town (Promotional Play-Offs), to date I am still with the team. I started off as a Marketing and Communication assistant and this season I am a National Liaison Officer.”

About the steady rise on women in sport media Katlego says: “it has the greatest impact as we see women’s sport taking its a rightful place both on the field and in the media. This will give equal opportunities for men and women to compete at the highest level of their sports. As well as to assume leadership roles within the industry. “GENDER EQUALITY”

Zwane elaborates on her duties as a National Liaison Officer: “I basically help foster professional relationships between two or more parties or organisations for their mutual benefits. I work in public relations department. I am a flow of information between the club and the stakeholders (Supporters/Fans).

“My role is to communicate with the public on behalf of the club. I handle public communications, incident response and conflict resolution. I am definitely a right person for this position because of my good verbal communication skills, good written, computer literacy and the ability to prioritise workloads.”

Outside of being an incredible player behind the scenes in all the teams she’s worked with, “Kay Gee” aspires to one day be South Africa’s leading Ndebele broadcaster.

“In KwaNdebele we are not privileged enough to get exposed to such and today I stand firm to chase my dreams.”

Despite being a diverse nation, many languages and cultures are under presented in the media space and Katlego emphasises the importance of young Ndebele girls seeing other women that look and speak like them on renowned media platforms.

“This will be an aspiration to many, more especially that we are not privileged enough to be exposed to such. Basically this will be very unique, we’ve never had a Ndebele Presenter and they will be proud. Also they’ll be encouraged so we can have more Ndebele broadcasters. “We Want Amandebele On TV”

Outside of her day to day duties at Casric Stars, the Mpumalanga native is part-founder of “Shibobo Sports Agency”, a boutique sports agency that prides itself in managing and developing both young and experienced footballers.

“We believe that, behind every great footballer in the modern game, you can be sure that there is an agent pulling strings in their favour because it’s just not possible to concentrate on other things when your call is to kick the ball. Therefore Shibobo is a representative and intermediary that handles the interests of its players & Coaches.”

As she plays her role in flying the flag for females in sport she hopes more women gain access to the endless opportunities available in sport.

“My wish for females in sports is to have equal opportunities so we can derive a psychological, physiological and sociological benefits of sports participation. Sports has been one of the most important socio-cultural learning experiences for boys and men for many years. Those same benefits should be afforded to girls and women who play sports to have higher levels of confidence and self-esteem and lower levels of depression.”

The soon-to-be Queen of Ndebele broadcasters says: “I am definitely going to make myself and KwaNdebele people proud. One day, I know for sure I will be featured on the “Forbes Magazine.”
