On Monday Kelli Shean had a rough first round of the Stroke Play event, but went on to shoot a course record of 6-under par in the afternoon, to tie for first place with Gilly Tebbutt.
After two holes of the play-off, the two long-time partners decided that they would share the title, and Kelli was awarded the trophy on a count-out.
The Western Province Championship Match Play event started on Tuesday morning, and a very strong field showed up, including Monique Smit, Sandra Winter, Ashleigh Holmes, Mercia Pretorius, Kim Williams, Iliska Verwey, Gilly Tebbutt, and Wendy Warrington.
Kelli powered ahead with a win in her morning round 6 and 5, and backed it up in the afternoon tie 3 and 1.
Her progress found Kelli taking on Mercia Pretorius (Gauteng) in the quarter-finals on Wednesday, and a significant 5 and 4 victory in the morning saw her facing Monique Smit (George) in the final.
With both Supersport and DTV cameras present, Kelli saved the best for last, taking the trophy 4 and 3 against a really tough competitor in Monique under windy circumstances.
Playing in her last Champs, the 2006 defending Stroke Play champion pointed out that in her winner’s speech that she actually did the one-and-a-half, and not the double, as the 2007 Stroke Play was shared with Gilly in a fitting end for the foursomes partners.
