KG Montjane has sealed the year with yet another double success, this time winning the Personality of the Year at the Gauteng Sports Awards, at a ceremony held at the Ace Ntsoelengoe Stadium in Mohlakeng in Rand West Municipality on Saturday, 18 November 2023. 

The wheelchair tennis ace scooped the award for the a second time as she was chosen but the public through SMS voting. The award is not the only victory of her night, she will also be getting a brand new car as part of her prize for the top award. 

The awards didn’t stop there for Montjane. She also took home the Sportswoman of the Year with Disability. She broke more barriers in 2023 as she became the first South African women to play at Wimbledon and also the first black African to play in all four grand slams in a calendar year. 

Athlete Zeney van der Walt won Sportswoman of the Year. She made it to the semi-finals of the 400m hurdles at the World Athletics Championship in Budapest in August. Van der Walt is a double gold medalist at the 2022 African Championships, in the 400m hurdles and the 4x400m hurdles respectively. She also won bronze at the Commonwealth Games in 2022.

It was nigh to remember for women’s in sport and sportswomen as the Coach of the Year and Technical Official of the Year categories this year had unprecedented all-female finalists. 

Ilse Roets Pelser won the top coach awards in the gymnastics sphere, while Hayley Walker was awarded the Technical Official of the Year for Figure Skating.  The pair have had significant successes which reached international levels. 

“We celebrate athletes whose relentless pursuit of excellence has inspired us all. Their dedication to their craft is a testament to the power of commitment and perseverance. Through their feats, they’ve not only brought glory to themselves but also to our province, uniting us in pride and joy,” said Gauteng MEC of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Morakane Mosupyoe.  

“Let us also recognise the unwavering support of coaches, families, and communities who stand as pillars behind every athlete, offering encouragement and guidance through the highs and lows of their journey,” she said.
