As the summer river canoeing season came to an end Team Best 4 Kayak Centre celebrated several significant awards, including Robyn Kime scooping the Western Cape Sportswoman of the Year Award.

Kime’s win in the Western Cape Sports Awards made waves as it was the first time an athlete from a so-called minor discipline had won the top award for female sport stars in the region.

Kime starred at the World Marathon Championships in Rome last year where she won the silver medal in her U23 age group.

“I felt very honoured and grateful to have been included in sportswoman of the year category alongside women who have been achieving phenomenal things in other sporting codes. I am surprised and delighted that I was chosen as the winner. I know that it must be very difficult to compare achievements across such diverse sports,” said Kime.

“It is encouraging that the provincial government recognises excellence across all sporting codes and it would be nice to see more coverage in the media of all “minor sports” and of women in particular,” she added.

“In this regard I think that canoeing has come a long way recently. There definitely seems to be more general awareness of the sport now than there was a year ago, and it is perhaps a good example for other minor sports.”

In addition to her brilliant performance on debut at the World Marathon Champs she won the SA K2 title on the Breede marathon, the Drak Challenge, The Unlimited Dusi and then won The Unlimited Non Stop Dusi in a K1 in a new record time.
