Knock Out Friday in Hockey IPT Semis

Kaspersky Southern Gauteng’s goal machine Pietie Coetzee Coetzee has racked up nine goals in the 2012 SA Hockey women’s IPT, being contested at the Randburg Astro in Johannesburg. Southerns ended the tournament’s pool-stage in second place behind an unbeaten Northerns outfit, and will play the second tournament semi-final against Pool B leaders, an impressive SA Under-21 side, at 5pm on Friday. The first semi-final at 3pm features tournament defending champs Western Province against Northerns. Northerns continued their winning record on Thursday at the 2012 SAHA Women’s Hockey IPT at Randburg Astro with a 4-3 win over Kaspersky Southern Gauteng to top Group B at the conclusion of the pool matches, while the free-scoring Southerns outfit were handed their first lost of the tournament by Northerns to finish second on the log, with 12 points from five games.

The SA U21 team finished their 2012 IPT round-robin campaign positively with a 3-2 win over Kaspersky Wits to end their round-robin fixtures convincingly at the top of Pool A with three wins and two draws in their five fixtures, two points clear of Western Province who sneak a semi-final spot with eight log points from two wins and three draws, one point ahead of North West.

Semi-finals action kicks off at 3pm featuring hard work for 2011 champs Western Province up against vs the dominant Northerns, while Pool a leaders SA U21 face a powerful Kaspersky Southern Gauteng in the closing fixture of the day, at 5pm.

If form is to be believed, it is likely that Southerns will face Northerns in a duel for the tournament bragging rights on Saturday, but the determination showed by an impressive SA Under-21 team promises a resolute battle against the mighty Southerns outfit, while tournament defending champs Western Province hope to make every chance count in their quest for an upset against Northerns.

Prolific Southern Gauteng striker Pietie Coetzee’s form in the tournament has been another eye-opening, and her strikes has her with nine goals to her name, and is currently the leading goal-scorer in the tournament.

Coetzee’s team mate Anika Fischer is second of the pool-stage goal-scoeres with six goals, while Kylie Oosthuizen (Northerns), Tsoanelo Pholo (Southern Gauteng) and Janie Porteous (Northerns) each have five goals each, and are tied for third.
