With just two days away to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa, for this week’s gsport IG Live, writer Lonwabo Nkohla hosted Momentum Proteas batter Lara Goodall.
Donning the green and gold is a massive achievement but to get the opportunity to do it at home in your own backyard is incredibly special and Goodall is excited by that prospect.
“We’ve been insanely busy since 7th of January, so there hasn’t been a loy of time to think about it because things happen very fast. We don’t like to look at it as pressure, we are enjoying the moment because we haven’t experienced playing at home in from of fans. I don’t think there’s anything better than that. We can’t wait for the first game to get things going.”
The team will be captained by allrounder Suné Luus, with Chloé Tryon continuing her role as vice-captain.
Currently ranked fifth in the ICC Women’s T20 Team Rankings, the Proteas Women will kick off their tournament in the opening game of the World Cup against Sri Lanka on Friday, 10 February at the Six Gun Grill Newlands Cricket Ground.

“Newlands is where I grew up, it’s home, I watched a lot of Test cricket there. It’s a place of fond memories. To be there and experience the World Cup there will be great.”
“It’s insanely special, it’s a different feeling. We’ve spoken to the other teams and they are enjoying Cape Town. Hopefully we can lift the trophy there”
South Africa will then complete their Group A fixtures with ties against New Zealand (13 February), the defending champions Australia (18 February) and Bangladesh (21 February), in an effort to qualify for their second straight T20 World Cup semi-final following their impressive showing at Australia 2020.
Group B is made up of England, India and Pakistan, as well as the West Indies and Ireland.
Coming from The Tri-Series against India and West Indies, and Goodall speaks on the importance of game time.
“Game time is always something that prepares you, you can spen 100 days on the net but game time prepares you most for moments like these. To see the girls flourishing under pressure in the Tri-Series was amazing to see.”
CSA Chief Executive, Pholetsi Moseki has said: “The Momentum Proteas have the potential to make history when they take to the field at the T20 World Cup at home. CSA and cricket-loving South Africans have no doubt this squad will go on to make the country proud.
