Stadium Australia is set to make history as the opening FIFA Women’s World Cup match is set for a record-breaking crowd of over 83,000 on Thursday, 20 July 2023.

This news was highlighted during The Great Debate: The 2023 #FIFAWWC at the Football Writers’ Festival, which was moderated by India’s freelance multimedia journalist, Annesha Ghosh.

Ghosh highlighted the historical significance of this event, as it coincides with the largest FIFA Women’s World Cup ever and marks the first appearance of the Republic of Ireland, who will face co-hosts Australia in the opening encounter.

“This is the largest FIFA Women’s World Cup edition ever, with 32 teams competing for the first time. Among them, the Republic of Ireland happens to be one of the eight teams making their debut,” she said.

The other seven teams making their debut at this year’s World Cup are Haiti, Morocco, Panama, Philippines, Portugal, Vietnam, and Zambia.

The festival, held from 15-17 July, was a star-studded event that brought together football players, authors, journalists, and broadcasters from around the world who have made significant contributions to the sport on and off the field.

Ghosh spoke exclusively to gsport about her preparations to cover the event, expressing her enthusiasm for attending press conferences, and media tribunes.

“There are three components to applying for access, or what FIFA calls media tickets,” Ghosh added.

“I’m looking forward to soaking it all up and seeing how Australia, specifically Sydney, delivers the FIFA Women’s World Cup because Australia is known for doing women’s sport.”
