South African batswoman, Laura Wolvaardt is the leading run scorer for the recently concluded ICC Women’s T20 World Cup with a total of 230 runs.
Wolvaardt made her debut for the South African women’s national cricket team in February 2016 and currently plays for the Western Province, Adelaide Strikers, Northern Superchargers and the senior national women’s team.
During the final of the T20 World Cup, the 23-year-old scored a total of 61 runs off 48 balls, taking her total for the series to 230. Wolvaardt hit a total of 22 fours and 5 sixes which made her the player who hit the most sixes throughout the tournament. The South African who helped her team to a second-place finish, scored 3 half centuries during the tournament against England (53), Bangladesh (66), and Australia (61).
The right-handed batter has made her mark in women’s cricket since she started. Wolvaardt’s name is known when it comes to Women’s One-Day Internationals, she is second on the list of most runs scored in a calendar year with a total of 882. She is the third youngest player to score a hundred – at only 17 years old. She is the fifth player who has the most catches in an innings (3) and sits in 10th place for most 50’s in her career (32).
Wolvaardt’s name is now alongside Dané van Niekerk’s in Women’s T20 International records. She is one of 13 batswoman to reach 50 runs in consecutive innings, her and van Niekerk have both successfully done this on three occasions, which places Wolvaardt at fourth on the list.
