Gauteng Lions hold the honour and assume the pressure as defending champions, in anticipation of next week’s Pick ‘n Pay Women’s Inter-Provincial Golf Championship.
The event starts at Germiston Golf Club on Sunday 17 September with the flag-raising ceremony, followed by a fun golf day for Pick ‘n Pay suppliers and guests, who aim to raise money for charity and golf development on Monday.
The official tournament commences Tuesday, as players compete in the qualifying stroke-play tournament comprising foursomes in the morning, and individual stroke play in the afternoon.
Tuesday’s results will determine how the teams are divided into four divisions, in which the players will contest the foursomes, singles, and round robin match play.
Gauteng Lions won the event in Bloemfontein in 2005, and in this year’s expanded team Kim Brookes joins Stacy Bregman, Ashleigh Simon, Tandi von Ruben, Tsebo Betty Mokoena, and Lizelle Muller.
Speaking to gsport today, Lions Manager and former Springbok golfer Alma Truss expressed confidence in her charges.
“They’ve been practising quite hard now for a couple of months,” joked Truss, “If we don’t win, we’ll send them all to the zoo!”
“In all seriousness,” Truss told gsport, “This is a very good team, and we have every expectation to win next week.”
The IPT is the final competitive outing for SA’s World Amateur Teams Championship team players Stacy Bregman, Ashleigh Simon and Kelli Shean, before they carry our hopes at the De Zalze and Stellenbosch, 18 – 21 October.
If you are a supporter of good women’s golf, join WSGA at Germiston Golf Club (opposite Rand Airport) 19 – 22 September from 7h30 – 17h30.
