South Africa’s best-performing tennis player, Lizaan du Plessis, confirmed her status among the country’s best after winning two trophies on the weekend, when she emerged winner of the Singles Draw, and also took the Doubles trophy with Lisa Marshall.
Top seed Lizaan du Plessis effortlessly overcame unseeded Chanel Simmons for a 6-1 6-0 win in the $10,000 ITF SAA Futures Tennis Tour Singles Main Draw (
Click here for the Singles Draw Results 51.70 Kb), and teamed up with Lisa Marshall for a 6-2 6-3 win in the Doubles Draw (Click here for the Doubles Draw Results) over second-seeded Tegan Edwards, teamed with Belgian Goele Lemmens.
In the singles draw, second-seeded Indian Ashmitha Easwaramuthi withdrew without taking to the court, and of the remaining seeds, only Lisa Marshall made it to the quarter-finals, where she lost to Du Plessis’ semi’s contender, Monica Gorny.
Du Plessis didn’t take too long to dispatch Gorney 6-1 6-2, while Simmonds’ path to the final was harder fought. A 6-3 6-4 first round victory over Este Potgieter preceded her empty draw against Easwaramuthi, and she emerged fresh enough in the quarter-finals to defeat Namibia’s Rieke Honiball 6-1 6-3.
The semi-finals presented Janine Erasmus, who had taken fifth-seed Tegan Edwards 6-2 6-4 in the second round, but Simmonds emerged in clean sets 6-3 6-4 to confront top-seeded Du Plessis in the final, where her worthy efforts were cast aside 6-1 6-0 for clean win to the favourite.
In the Doubles draw ( Click here for the Doubles Draw Results 47.78 Kb), Du Plessis and Marshall progressed after a first-round bye to progress 6-1 6-2 without fluster against Russia’s Ksenia Moskal teamed with Japan’s Chika Terasawa.
The semi-final pairing of Esme de Villiers and Jenna-May Osborne then set a cat among the pigeons by contesting the first set to a narrow 7-5 defeat, before upending the favourites 3-6 in the second, before a tie-break settled matters 10-7 to the benefit of the seeds.
