World No. 1 Singles Bowler Lorna Trigwell took some time out before departing for the 2008 World Bowls Championships, scheduled for Christchurch in New Zealand, beginning Saturday 12 January.
Trigwell is a keen sportswoman, and was a keen netball and hockey player before retiring after knee operation, an event she regarded as an opportunity to begin a long and illustrious bowls career. Trigwell spoke to gsport:
How long have you been playing bowls?
I have been bowling for 27 years.
What does it mean to you to be the world’s best-ranked woman bowler?
I am very proud to be Number 1 on the World Bowls Singles Ranking List, it reflects my consistent performance in World Bowls Singles. (Indoor and Outdoor) and doing my Country proud too, as it is the first time [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][that] a Protea player has been number 1. Hope to be there for a while.
To what do you owe your remarkable success?
I owe my success to my passion of the game, determination, dedication, commitment, practice. I thrive on pressure, am fiercely competitive, and have supreme confidence in myself.
Who are your sponsors, and how have they contributed to your game?
I have no personal financial sponsors. I have tried to market myself and I had a company trying. When it comes to my sport, no-one is interested. I spend much of my own money to travel. It is very disheartening.
How much encouragement do you receive from being a part of such a talented women’s team, ahead of the World Champs?
I am looking forward to be skipping a team of mixture which is a challenge. Three players in the team are the first time playing at this level (World Bowls), but I do have great confidence in them. The girls love me cause I make them laugh, and we get on well as a team
What can South Africa realistically hope to achieve in New Zealand?
Our aim is to achieve a medal in every discipline. I am playing in the fours and the triples, so I am looking for medals and very hungry for them too. Also the greens will be a lot quicker than what we have here, so it will be a challenge to all of us.
What does it mean to represent your country?
It is the highest achievement for any sports person, [and] it fills me with pride to represent my country.
What advice do you have for other women, who regard you as an inspiration?
Be confident in your own ability, practice hard, concentrate and please believe me when I say: BELIEVE in yourself. No-one out there is better then you.
Bowls has drawn many youngsters to the game in recent years, to what can its popularity be attributed?
Bowls is not just for old people. It is for all ages, and it has become very colourful to bring youngsters in the game. The playing bowls are now in every colour, and the clothing are for old and young.
