Huge surf at the ASP World Junior Championships only brought misery for South African hopeful Tarryn Chudleigh, who pulled off some of her best surfing ever only to be cruelly eliminated, following the eventual completion of the second round earlier on Sunday in Sydney, Australia.

Chudleigh clinched a very good second heat average of 11.56, agonisingly short of second-placed Hawaiian Alessa Cuizon’s 11.80, who goes through to contest the third round with top finisher Coco Ho, who recorded an amazing 16.50 in big surf.

Chudleigh’s second-round score would comfortably have beaten every contestant in the first heat, won by Leila Hurst with a score of 10.33.

Fellow South African Nikita Robb, whose first-round performance was good enough to progress directly to the third round, now has the opportunity for patriotic revenge against Cuizon, who is her rival in the third-round fourth heat.

The girls’ division of the Junior Championships are expected to be completed on Monday.

Girls Round 2 Results:
Heat 1: Leila Hurst (HAW) 10.33; Nao Omura (JPN) 9.07; Asako Mizuno (JPN) 3.50
Heat 2: Coco Ho (HAW) 16.50; Alessa Cuizon (HAW) 11.80; Tarryn Chudleigh (SA) 11.56
