As the CAF TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations looms, the Botswana Football Association recently announced a timely financial boost ahead of the 2025 showpiece in Morocco.

Lucara Botswana, a diamond mining company in Botswana, has sponsored The Mighty Mares to the tune of P500 000 (a little over R660k), to assist with preparations for next year.

This crucial boost will aid in ensuring the team has the resources needed for high-level training, competitive matches, and overall readiness necessary to represent Botswana on the continental stage.

True to its stated dedication to uplifting communities, Lucara Botswana shows commitment to empowering women in sports and fostering national pride with this investment.

Managing Director at the mining giant, Nassim Lahri, highlighted the significance of investing in such an initiatives. 

“We are proud to support The Mighty Mares as they prepare for this historic opportunity. Football has the power to bring people together, and we are committed to fostering national pride and excellence.”

Botswana’s senior women’s football team will face stiff competition in Group B of the 15th edition of the WAFCON, where the Mares find themselves in a challenging group alongside African football giants Nigeria, who boast an impressive 11 WAFCON titles and are gunning for their 12th. 

Completing the group are Tunisia and Algeria, both formidable teams in their own right, promising intense competition. 

The stage is set for the tournament in Morocco, scheduled to run from 5 to 26 July, 2025.
