At the recent 13th Free State Championships, both Lucille Brown and Nombulelo Gavin vowed to be the dominant Morabaraba player.
Lucille Brown is currently the reigning National Champion for Morabaraba as well as being the North West Champion for Morabaraba, the Mpumulanga Champion for Checkers and is ranked as the sixth best female Checkers (64 square) player in the world by the WCDF.
Nombulelo Gavin from Fakkel School, although new to competition has already stamped her mark on competitive gaming in South Africa. After winning the Fezile Dabi Regional Championships, Nombulelo moved on to win the 2016 Mpumulanga Championships.
Thus with both entering the 2016 Free State Championships, sparks were bound to fly, and when both players were paired against each other, the air was thick with tension.
No-one gave quarter, and yet there were the highest levels of ‘sportswomanship’. Throughout, both Lucille and Nombulelo demonstrated great dignity and decorum.
It is sometimes a shame that there can only be one winner, and this was one of those times!
Eventually Lucille emerged as the winner. However, in a game such as this, the game itself was ultimately the winner.
Congrats to both!
