Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies secured the title of champions of the CAF Women’s Champions League | COSAFA Qualifiers 2023, after a remarkable 2-0 victory over Double Action Ladies at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Durban on Friday, 8 September 2023.
“Credit must go to my girls, credit must go to the technical team, credit must go to the medical team. We did a wonderful job, It wasn’t an easy tournament for us. It was a very difficult one, taking into consideration that we came into this tournament with few players who were injured,” explained head coach, Jerry Tshabalala.
“For the girls to give this kind of performance, credit must go to them. As much as sometimes I’m a little bit harsh on them, they did their best and I’m really excited and looking forward to the next one.
Sundowns Ladies have earned the prestigious opportunity to represent COSAFA at the CAF Women’s Champions League Finals in Ivory Coast this coming November, thanks to their well-deserved title as the 2023 regional champions.
“I would be the happiest if we could go to Ivory Coast with an injury free team. The key thing would be to manage players better,” added coach Tshabalala.
This will mark Sundowns’ third appearance at the continental finals. They previously clinched the title in 2021, but experienced defeat against Moroccan side FAR Rabat the following year.
Double Action Ladies can take solace in their remarkable achievement of reaching the final for the first time in the qualifiers, earning them the title of silver medallists and marking their best-ever finish.
In the earlier third-place playoff, Costa do Sol achieved a historic moment, defeating defending champions Green Buffaloes 2-1.
