Considered an ideal qualifier and preparatory event for both the Two Oceans and Comrades, renowned athletes will be putting on their running shoes to participate in one of the most beautiful races in the country, the Oude Molen Elgin Race, on Saturday, 23 February.
Competitors enter on the morning of the race for the half marathon, 10km road race and 5km Schools Challenge at the Oude Molen Distillery in Elgin.
The first 2km and the last 9km of the race are run on gravel roads through the apple orchards of the Elgin Valley, while the majority of hill work is run in the second half of race which include some steep inclines, but certainly not of Heartbreak Hill magnitude.
Athletes can put their endurance levels to the test with their eyes on the R2000 prize money up for grabs, and event organisers have also announced cash prizes on offer to any runner able to break the course record set during the inaugural race in 2007, where the women will be aiming at Farwa Mentoor’s time of 1:24:18.
The Oude Molen Elgin is open to individual athletes as well as groups of scholars for the Schools Challenge, where the school with the most participants will walk away with R2000 in prize money.
Only scholars running in their school uniforms will qualify for the Schools Challenge, while one lucky runner is guaranteed a fabulous spot prize of a return ticket including airfare and accommodation to Durban, to attend the 2008 Comrades.
The Oude Molen Elgin Race promises to be endless fun for participants and spectators alike and, for an additional R25, spectators can tour the impressive distillery, which includes a tasting. Bookings are essential.
Entries fees are R40 for the 21.1km race, R20 for 10km and R10 for the 5km Fun Run and Schools Challenge. The action kicks off at 7h00 at the recently renovated distillery. For those individuals who come simply to enjoy the beauty of the picturesque countryside, walkers are also welcome!
