In last week’s gsport Twitter Space, host Oarabile Diphoko caught up with rising netball star Maritske Rautenbach, who spoke about her career so far and shared her thoughts on the upcoming 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town.
Rautenbach, who recently won a gold medal at the Region V Youth Games in Malawi, stated how she chose netball over athletics when she got to University of Johannesburg.
“Something told me that my heart belongs to netball. I have always loved it and I think there is a big future in the sport,” she said.
Speaking about the recent games, the 19-year-old stated: “I can’t even begin to explain how I felt once I found out that I had made the team. It just feels so good to know that all the hard work I’ve put in has finally paid off. To be able to represent your country is an amazing feeling and the games give you a lot of development as a player.”
With the 2023 Netball World Cup heading to South Africa, Rautenbach shared her excitement, adding that this upcoming year is going to be the year for netball.
“Even now, wearing our Netball Friday T-shirts, you just get a feeling that something big is coming. This will definitely motivate the younger players coming into the sport when they see sponsors that are coming through and the opportunities that it creates for us.”
Chatting about her future aspirations, Rautenbach made it clear that she wants to play for the SPAR Proteas. For now, she will continue to focus on Varsity Netball and keep enjoying it every single step of the way.
Joining in on the conversation was gsport founder Kass Naidoo, who added that 2022 has been an exceptional year for young talent.
