Maties brush past UJ to the joy of their home support

The Maties netball team continued their strong start to the 2018 Varsity Netball season as they beat UJ 63-30 at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre on Monday night.

After winning their first two matches, the Maties went down narrowly to the defending champions Tuks, but they were in an unforgiving mood against the ladies from Johannesburg.

After the first quarter the Stellenbosch students were leading 11-5 but they put the foot down to race out to a 28-10 lead at halftime. Maties coach Zanele Mdodana and her UJ counterpart Roelize Mors both used their power plays in the third quarter and after a flurry of scoring activity the Maties had a 39-19 lead and they were chasing the all-important bonus point.

Going into the final quarter the Maties were leading 47-22 and the 50-goal mark was reached courtesy of some sharpshooting by Sian Moore. The Maties kept up the scoring and finished with 63 goals, which meant they scored a least once a minute during the entire match.

UJ next face the defending champions Tuks and UWC over the bumper weekend, while Maties host NWU and Kovsies in what promises to be two mouth-watering clashes!
