Durban is known for their sandy beaches and humidity, but soon it will be known as the place that bore promising golfer, Abigail Thambiran.
At only three-years-old when her father introduced her to golf, Thambiran has been making her name known around the world ever since.
Now seven-years of age, Thambiran has already won the Junior African Challenge Girls U7 Championship, the World PeeWee Competition held in Florida, USA, and has qualified for the Malaysian Kids World Championships taking place in December this year.
The rising star took time from her preparations for the Malaysian Kids World Championships to speak to gsport January Vacation Reporter, Koketso Kgogome about who inspires her and her goals for the year.
What sparked your interest in golf?
My dad introduced me to the sport when I was three years old.
When did you realise you were good at playing the sport?
My dad says that I had shown great hand-eye co-ordination from the age of three and I had a natural swing. From there we just had fun to develop my interest in the game.
Who do you draw inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from all female golfers but my favourite player is Michelle Wie.
Who are your biggest supporters?
My biggest supporters are friends, family and members of my community.
What does your typical day look like?
My typical day is me going to school, after school I rest for a while and then I go to practice. Only after practice that is when I do my homework.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love spending time with my family. I also enjoy reading and watching movies in my spare time.
What are your goals for the year?
My goals for the year are to ensure I am faithful to God. To ensure my academic goals are achieved and to ensure that I play golf to enjoy myself. My goal is to also do well at the 2020 Junior African Challenge and the Malaysian Kids World Championships. Lastly, my goal is to inspire young girls to get involved in sports from a young age.
