Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa calls out to corporate South Africa to join the government in ensuring the professionalisation of women’s football and netball in the country.

On Thursday, 17 August, the department held a special breakfast in Johannesburg to honour both Banyana Banyana and Spar Proteas for representing the country at the FIFA Women’s World Cup and Netball World Cup, respectively.

In Australia and New Zealand, Banyana Banyana made history becoming the first national football team – male or female – to progress to the Round of 16, a feat which has led Kodwa to urge corporate giants to see the value of women’s sport.

“Women athletes made the 2023 Women’s Month a memorable one! I am so elated about these achievements. We owe it to them to do all in our power to afford them the recognition and support they deserve and more. May today’s (Thursday) celebrations be the catalyst for the continued honouring of our elite sportswomen,” said Kodwa.

“I challenge corporate SA to join the department in ensuring that we as a country recognise, cultivate and celebrate excellence across sporting codes. I have repeatedly supported the full professionalising of women’s football and netball in South Africa,” he concluded.
