Momentum Proteas Stars Score Big at WPL Auction

South African women’s cricketers Shabnim Ismail, Marizanne Kapp, Dané van Niekerk and Chloé Tryon scored big at the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction for the five team tournament to be held in Mumbai in March.

Kapp and Ismail landed themselves millions at the  WPL auction on Monday, 13 February 2023. Kapp was snapped up by the Delhi Capitals and Ismail by UP (Uttar Pradesh) Warriors.

Before Kapp was snatched for INP 1.5 core equivalent to R3.2 million by the Delhi Capitals, she was involved in a bidding war between Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Giant, UPZ Warriors and the team that got her at the end the Delhi Capitals.

While, South Africa’s highest wicket-taker in women’s T20 cricket, Ismail, was secured by UPZ Warriors for INR 1 core close to R2.1 million.

While their other teammates Suné Luus, Laura Wolvaardt, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Ayabonga Khaka, Nadine Klerk and Tazmin Brits were not picked in the first draft.

Later in the day Royal Challengers Bangalore announced all-rounder Dané van Niekerk for 30 lakh close to R660 549.90. But van Niekerk will need a NOC (No Objection Certificate) from Cricket South Africa to participate in the tournament.

A final decision on the NOC for van Niekerk will be taken after a meeting with CSA’s director Enoch Nkwe and the CSA medical team.

While, all-rounder Chloé Tryon joined Mumbai Indians for 30 lakh.
