Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson set the fastest women’s indoor 800m time of the year at a meeting in Poland. The Olympic and world silver medallist won her race in 1:57.87 at the Copernicus Cup in Torun on Wednesday, 8 February 2023.
Hodgkinson is no stranger to breaking records, in 2021, she won gold at the European indoor tournament in Torun. At a young age of 20, Hodgkinson broke the women’s 600m world indoor record in Manchester last month, thus making her the world’s best at the indoor 600m.
Hodgkinson is an English athlete who specializes in the 800m race. In 2019, she won a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, breaking the British record that was set by Kelly Holmes in 1995.
Hodgkinson won silver at both the 2022 World Championships and the 2022 Commonwealth Games but dominated the stage when she won her first major senior outdoor gold medal at the 2022 European Athletic Championships.
The results Hodgkinson obtained at both Tokyo Olympics and her junior indoor mark are European U/20 records, making her the fourth fastest woman athlete at 800m and the second fastest U/20 woman of all time.
At age 16, Hodgkinson became the European U/18 Champion in 800m and won England’s U/20 title, not long after that she won the bronze medal at the European U/20 Championships.
Hodgkinson has dominated the athletics track from the tender age of 11, when she had an unbeaten streak of 14 consecutive running events. At 12 years old, she won all her 13 track races ranging from 800m to 1500m events as well as many cross country competitions.
Hodgkinson held the record the 1200m race for 4 years when it was broken in 2019. As of 2021, it remained the third fastest on the British U/13 girl’s all-time list.
