Mpuma Women’s Football Tournament Unveiled

Chest Trap Sport in partnership with the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation – Mpumalanga Province, and SAFA Mpumalanga will host Mpumalanga’s first Women’s Football Tournament. The tournament will take place on 3 May 2014, at the Themba Sinamela Stadium in Mhluzi.

Limited sponsorships, leagues and competitions for women’s football are obstacles in Mpumalanga. These challenges contribute to poor results in the National Championships, inadequate number of players representing the province at national level, lack of recognition for players at national level.

The tournament aims to address some of these challenges.

Banyana Banyana Defender Noluthando Vilakazi, who hails from Mpumalanga, said that the tournament will create a platform for women’s football in Mpumalanga.

“I am truly honoured to be the ambassador of Mpumalanga Women’s Football Tournament,” said Vilakazi, “And I hope that this tournament will motivate young girls who aspire to be professional footballers to not give up on that dream.”

A number of national team scouts will also be present at the event scouting among the top two SASOL League teams from three regions in Mpumalanga, namely the Mpumalanga Ladies and Coal City Wizards (from the Nkangala Region), Flamingo and Francis (from the Enhlanzeni Region), and the FC Royal Knights and Leandre FC (from the Gert Sibande Region).

The team that wins first place will take home R10,000, while the silver medallists will walk away with R6,000, with the remaining participants finishing from third to sixth place will each go home with R1,000.

Sweetness Masango, Co-founder of Chest Trap Sport, said that Chest Trap’s main mission is to improve the standard of women’s football in South Africa. “This tournament will be used as a tool to increase the level of participation of women’s football within Mpumalanga and celebrate 20 years of democracy, freedom and inspiration.

“Our gratitude goes to the Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation for funding the event,” said Masango. “Without their support this event would only be an idea.”

Entrance is free for the public, and gates will open at 09:00.
