Women’s freestyle specialist Kayla Ferreira has impressed after winning five gold medals for Team South Africa, at the Zone VI Games in Lusaka, Zambia, which conclude today.

Ferreira’s medal haul includes three individual first-place finishes in the 50-metre, 100m and 200m freestyle, while she’s also been part of two relay teams, winning the 4x50m freestyle relay final with Amy Peens, Kirsty Muller and Emma Chelius on Saturday before winning the 4x100m medley relay with Nathania van Niekerk, Kelly Gunnell and Amy Peens on Sunday.

Team South Africa’s swimming team stretched its overall medal tally to 43 on Sunday.

After winning 21 medals out of a possible 22 on day two, South Africa claimed 22 podium finishes from 12 races on day three, including 12 gold, nine silver and two bronze in a performance that also boasted 19 new tournament records in total.

This was an outstanding performance from the swimmers, considering that each nation was restricted to two swimmers per final.

Team SA was seven short from their tournament goal of 50 medals overnight, and should exceed their expectations on the final race day on Monday.
