Netball World Cup Legacy Programme Kicks Off in Hammersdale

Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Nocawe Mafu and Netball South Africa President, Cecilia Molokwane visited schools in KZN as part of an outreach programme aimed at providing sports facilities and equipment.

The first day of the programme began at Sibonokuhle High School and Salphine Primary School, where the Deputy Minister and Molokwane spent time connecting with learners, donated sanitary towels and Gilbert Netball balls.

On Thursday, 3 February 2022, Molokwane and Mafu, visited Spar Proteas captain, Bongi Msomi’s former high school, Luthayi High, in Hammarsdale, for the handover of the multi-purpose sports facility, which kick-started the department’s Netball World Cup 2023 Legacy Programme.

Speaking on the sports facility handover, the Deputy Minister said: “The upcoming Netball World Cup is almost a year away and this initiative has presented to all of us an opportunity to create a legacy which will be able to produce future stars who can serve as our country’s ambassadors and also contribute to future administration of the sport. We are also pleased to be celebrating a Netball icon as we kick-start the legacy programme.”

Chairman of the Sports Trust, Jackie Mathebula, said they are proud to be implementing these state-of-the-art facilities, which will provide learners with access to world class facilities and encourage sport participation.

“The benefits of these facilities is that they have a 20-year lifespan with a 15 year warranty, they are eco-friendly, zero waste and provide lateral forgiveness on the joints to prevent any injury and can be used up to 365 days of the year and are low maintenance. These new facilities will be able to act as a “sporting hub” for communities where they are installed, therefore assisting and enhancing education through sport,” Mathebula concluded.
