2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup co-hosts New Zealand are off to a positive start, after a 1-0 victory over Norway on Thursday, 20 July 2023.

New Zealand claimed their first ever World Cup win, at their 16th attempt, as Hannah Wilkinson’s goal early in the second half shocked group favourites Norway at a sold-out Eden Park.

In the second World Cup match of the day, co-hosts Australia fought off a tough Republic of Ireland side, in a 1-0 win at Stadium Australia.

Going into the match, Australia were the favourites as their opponents made their World Cup debut, however the Vera Pauw coached side came into the game aiming to get their campaign off to a good start.

However, a penalty in the 52nd minute converted by Steph Catley ensured that The Matlidas walked away with a victory under their belt in front of over 75 000 spectators.

Australia are currently playing their opening match against debutants Republic of Ireland in Sydney. Unfortunately, the co-hosts are without their star forward Sam Kerr, who suffered a calf injury in training on the day before the tournament.
