Rookie ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) campaigner East Londoner Nikita Robb was a top South African surfer at the Rip Curl Boardmasters in Newquay, England on the weekend.
Robb, who turned professional at the start of the year after matriculating in 2006, advanced through three rounds in a top class field in the 5 Star, R175 000 Davidoff Cool Water Wave women’s event, before coming up against an in-form Jacqueline Silva in a one-on-one heat in the quarterfinals.
Silva, who went on to win the event and move to the top of the WQS women’s ratings, defeated Robb by 13.0 to 9.50, to leave the South African in fifth place overall with earnings of R6 000 and 1 220 points, matching her best result of the year to date.
Robb maintained her 13th spot on the rankings and now has only the 4 Star-rated event starting on Thursday in Brazil, and the 6 Star-rated event in Hawaii at the end of November, in which to force her way into the top 10 on the ratings.
To emulate fellow East Londoner Rosanne Hodge, who qualified for the top level ASP Women’s World Tour when she ended last year in ninth place on the WQS ratings, Robb will have to pull out all the stops against the world’s best.
Hodge, who goes into the third World Tour event of the year, starting on 20 August in Brazil, ranked equal 12th on the elite tour, placed equal ninth in England when she was eliminated in the round of 12.
