Rookie South African surfing pro Nikita Robb stayed on track for her best result of the year, by advancing to the last eight at the 5 Star R175 000 Rip Curl Boardmasters women’s event at Fistral Beach in Newquay, England, on Friday.
On a day of upsets, Robb secured second place in her fourth round heat to set up a one-on-one encounter against Brazilian Jacqueline Silva in the quarterfinals.
The 18 year-old from East London, who turned professional at the start of the year after matriculating in 2006, is hovering on the cusp of qualifying for the elite ASP Women’s World Tour for 2008 in her rookie season.
Ranked No. 13 on the World Qualifying Series (WQS) going into this event, and with just one more 6 Star rated event still on the schedule for 2007, Robb needs to force her way into the top 10 on the WQS ratings to emulate fellow East Londoner Rosanne Hodge who qualified for the top level tour last year.
Hodge was eliminated in round four yesterday when she finished third behind Julia Christian (USA) and fellow World Tour campaigner Rebecca Woods (AUS) while Tammy-Lee Smith (Salt Rock) was disappointed to be ousted from the contest in the first round.
