Once again KwaZulu Natal’s Nkobongo Women’s Cricket Club have managed to produce five girls who were selected for the Ilembe and District Under13 Girls’ Squad, which participates in the KZN Girls Under13 Cricket Festival.
They are Nomzamo Gumede, Sphumelele Thwala, Thandeka Sodladla, Zinhle Mbambo and Lungile Mlothwa.
Their coach Lunga Ntuli said: "When I received the news, I was over the moon, although I knew that they were going to make the squad.
"Nomzamo, who bats at number 3, started playing cricket this year, and has shown so much talent and progress in the past months.
"Sphume (medium-fast opening bowler), who started last when she made her debut in club cricket last year," continued Lunga, "As a eleven-year old, she took five wickets and won the award as the best bowler in the club’s awards.
"Thandeka is the shortest of them all she also started this year she is the most brave girl I’ve coached. She bats at number six and she hits the ball hard with natural timing.
"Zinhle a fast bowler she also started last year and she got an award for the most improved player last year and she is becoming a fine all-rounder, Lungile is an opening bat lady and wicket keeper she also started last year.
Continuing, Ntuli said: "Lungile is a keeper that you will watch the whole day, and she has kept for the boys team as well.
"Furthermore the club has started the season by beating Collegians in the KZN Women’s League, unfortunately with bad weather, most of the games were cancelled."
