With the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup under 10 days away, the latest MRF Tyres ICC T20I Player Rankings make for an interesting read. Momentum Proteas duo Nonkululeko Mlaba and Laura Wolvaardt have made big gains in the latest rankings.
Mlaba made significant ground on England’s top ranked T20I bowler Sophie Ecclestone as a result of some strong performances during the ongoing tri-series between India, South Africa and the West Indies.
The South African spinner is sitting on 732 points and as we look ahead to the global showpiece in South Africa, starting on the 10th of February, the points between the top three positions are so close that Mlaba and India’s Deepti Sharma (737) are in the race to grab the top position in the shortest format of the game. Ecclestone’s lead is down to just 26 rating points.
South Africa top-order performer Laura Wolvaardt is among the biggest movers as she’s jumped four places to ninth overall on the back of her strong start to the tri-series. Wolvaardt is the only South African in the top 10.
Her teammate Tazmin Brits jumps 10 spots to 18th after an impressive half-century last week.
Australia right-hander Tahlia McGrath maintains a healthy buffer at the top of the T20I batter rankings.
