Kazakhstan’s Norah Jeruto won the country’s first-ever gold medal in the women’s 3000m steeplechase at World Athletics Championships in Oregon, on Thursday, 21 July 2022.
The Kenyan-born athlete clocked in a time of 8:53.02, making this a championship record and the third-fastest time in history, to claim her first world title.

The 26 year old outmatched the Ethiopian duo of Werkuha Getachew, 8:54.61, who took the silver medal in a national record time and Mekidas Abebe in a personal best of 8:56.08 to claim the bronze.

The ladies earned their stripes as this was the first steeplechase in history in which three women had finished inside nine minutes.

Jeruto moved to Kazakhstan from Kenya in 2017 and officially got permission to represent the country at the world championships this year.
