With both teams travelling and playing on even ground NWU took early control of the match and despite the fighting effort UJ put up, won the match by a significant 77-27 margin on Sunday at the Callie Human Indoor Centre, in Bloemfontein.
NWU got off to a good start in the first quarter with Zigi Burger converting their centre pass. UJ converted their first centre pass, after which NWU seemed to get into the swing of things and pulled ahead with a three-goal lead. UJ closed the gap quickly to a one-goal lead by NWU. By the end of the quarter and after a few interceptions by Monique Reyneke, NWU had extended their lead to 18-7.
The team from the North West continued in the second quarter with GA converting the first centre pass. NWU called for their powerplay early, but neither team made use of it scoring only one goal each. Shortly after the powerplay UJ lost their Wing Attack to injury. Despite a great long-range shot by UJ’s Goal Attack, they only managed to score four goals in the second quarter, leaving the half time score at 39-11.
Both teams started the second half with changes. UJ’s defence worked hard, but the team from Johannesburg struggled to convert the turnover balls. At the opposite end of the court Reyneke, continued to show her dedication. UJ called their powerplay, but NWU were the first and only to make use of it, scoring three double-pointer goals. With 5 minutes left in the quarter NWU hit the 50-goal mark and ended the quarter 56 goals to 19.
The last 15 minutes started with some position shuffling. This seemed to be a better quarter for UJ with them scoring the first goal of the quarter and their defence putting a lot of pressure on the NWU team. However, the North West team could not be stopped, as they quickly turned and converted the last centre pass as the match ended.
