Without doubt the teams that ‘White Rabbit Gaming’ (WRG) puts into the field are some of the finest esports teams in South Africa.
Thus, it was no surprise that WRG dominated the game of League of Legends title at MSSA’s 20th North west championships held on 5 & 6 March 2016 at St Conrad’s College in Klerksdorp.
League of Legends (abbreviated LoL or just League) is a multiplayer online battle arena, real-time strategy computer game developed and published by Riot Games.
The game is free-to-play game and was inspired by the title ‘Defense of the Ancients’ which was based on the game ‘Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne’.
The goal is to destroy the opposing team’s base which is protected by defensive structures.
While the WRG team is made up predominately by males, the star of the team is definitely Odelia le Roux.
Odelia started playing the male dominated League of Legends title about 5 years ago.
Having started playing as an ‘adc’ (bottom lane), Odelia progressed to play ‘jungle’…
However, Odelia has now progressed to mainly play support and middle lane, which again demonstrate Odelia’s command of the game.
Odelia admits that while she does enjoy playing games like CounterStrike: GO anf Guild Wars on a recreational level, she only plays League of Legends competitively.
The game is competitive, and Odelia is equally so. In fact, Odelia has openly admitted, “My main hope is to get SA colours, and be an icon for female gamers to encourage them and show them anything is possible”.
Odelia then went on to say, “Being a female isn’t what is limiting us, it’s our fear of commitment and struggle especially against players who have achieved so much.”
Odelia is determined to represent South Africa and to be in the next Protea Team, however, Odelia is fully aware that, as Odelia puts it, “You have to dream big and never stop trying to reach your goals”.
