Huge crowds are anticipated for this weekend’s SPAR Ocean Racing Series finale at Hobie Beach, and Sunday’s race, sponsored by SpecSavers, is expected to draw a record number of participants, with more than 500 Series registered competitors having a final chance to qualify for the lucky draw prize of a FIAT Strada X-Space, which is to be drawn at the Series prize-giving function at the News Café in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.
The 12th race of the Series, which started in October, takes place on Sunday morning at Hobie Beach from 9am, and will be followed by a community Beach Clean-up after the event which is being sponsored by Ocean Minded, an international footwear company.
Top national open water swimmers, including PE’s Velia Janse van Rensburg, are expected to contest line honours in the 2km Ocean Swim, and the 1km distance swim, the 5km fun run, whilst Janine Wood will tussle it out with several competitors for overall honours in the 4km Ocean Paddle and the 8km Ocean Paddle.
