Preview: Peninsula v North West

Peninsula coach, Adam Wilson, says his team is all fired up for their SPAR Hockey IPT B-Section final against North West, which takes place at Cape Town’s Hartleyvale Astro today.

A rampant Peninsula team thrashed Boland 10-nil in their final pool game to top the B section log and remain unbeaten after five games.

“I can’t complain. The ladies have performed. It’s what we came out to do so I am happy with that. My ladies played a quality passing game today (Friday). It was just simple patient hockey and it paid off.”

Wilson says the biggest motivating factor for his team to win today’s final against North West is their burning desire to be promoted to the A Section next year.

“We are going in there to win the game. We want to be promoted next year, and my girls are fired. Looking at our results in the pool games… we definitely want to put ourselves up as favourites to win the B Section.”

Assuming all goes well today and they beat North West, Wilson is confident the Peninsula team has what it takes to make the step up next year.

“Watching the teams that played here this year, we can definitely compete. With the strength around Western Province, with the different various teams, I definitely feel the Peninsula side will be able to cope up in the A Section.”

Meanwhile Kamran Shah, coach of North West, says his team is in good touch, and there is great enthusiasm in the camp. North West warmed up for today’s final with a 9-1 drubbing of the Eastern Province Settlers yesterday.

“Yes, we are feeling positive, we’re going for the win and we want to lift the trophy. We started with that draw (against Witwatersrand). Sometimes in hockey, there is a day you can’t take your opportunities. The final, we have a strategy to play more positive hockey, more attacking hockey.”

Shah says he is proud of what his team has achieved this past week. “Our team have done tremendously well. We have a good blend of experience and young players. They have been terrific during the tournament.”

The B-Section final takes place 1:30pm today.
