The semi-finals of the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations were nothing short of drama, from Nigeria having to navigate a match two players down at the  50th minute, to VAR enjoying the last say as South Africa were awarded a penalty which was converted by Linda Motlhalo, taking Banyana Banyana to the final.

More exciting news came as the second semi-final between the hosts and the Super Falcons was underway at the Stade Mohamed V, Casablanca. A new African match attendance record was set with 45,562 spectators watching the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco pip the titleholders of Nigeria to qualify for their first WAFCON finals appearance.

The hosts, however, won 5-4 on penalties to set up a final clash against South Africa on Saturday, 23 July.

Nigeria, Morocco, South Africa and Zambia have qualified for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
