South Africa’s Spar Proteas continued their unbeaten head-to-head streak over Wales after a comfortable 17-goal victory in their first of two test matches in Cardiff, on Tuesday 19 July 2022.
Both teams had a strong start in the first quarter with a lot of intensity in the match. The Spar Proteas had an early 5-goal lead mid-way into the game, but the Welsh fought back to end the quarter 14-all.
Spar Proteas coach Dorette Badenhorst made a few changes in the second quarter which saw Izette Griesel and Nicola Smith come in at Center and Goal Defence, respectively, while Shadine van der Merwe moved to Wing Defence. The changes worked for the South Africans as they had a solid defence that applied enough pressure to dismantle the Welsh attack.
At half-time, the Proteas had a comfortable 12-goal lead.
South Africa increased their intensity in the attack with the introduction of Elmeré van der Berg at Goal Attack who was imperative with the rebounds gained. The changes brought in stability and confidence for the Spar Proteas to increase their lead and finish the third quarter with a 19-goal lead.
The Welsh team came back with great dominance in the fourth quarter with a stronger defence and effective attacking side. The home side tried to come back but the job had already be done by the Proteas.
The two teams will meet again on Wednesday night, at 19h50 CAT for their second and final test match. You can catch all the action live on SuperSport Variety 4, Channel 209 or you can follow @gsport4girls on Twitter for the latest updates.
