2007 Defending champions Velia Janse van Rensburg (right) is in line for a record seventh Ladies Mile title on Sunday.

In a significant sponsorship development in this
weekend’s SPAR Redhouse River Mile open water event in the Eastern Cape, Speedo have released an
announcement that the winner of the Ladies Mile event will receive a R5,000
product sponsorship.


Further, if
Velia Janse van Rensburg, defending champion and favourites for the title clinches
her 7th consecutive title on Sunday, another event sponsor has announced that
it will be presenting her with a prize valued at over R100,000.

Janse van
Rensburg is a firm favourite to represent South Africa in the 10km open water
swim at the Beijing Olympics later this year.

Over 750
swimmers are expected to enter the Mile events on Sunday morning, with the bulk
of these registering at the Village from noon on Saturday.

family-style fashion, the Cerebos Potjiekos competition takes place at the
Redhouse River Mile festival on Saturday from 12 noon, where in excess of 5000
friends and supporters will be entertained by live bands, a beer garden, Super
14 rugby and a kid’s entertainment area.

Pre-registration
for the 84th SPAR Redhouse River Mile will open their doors from 12 noon, and
the first 300 Mile entrants through the doors will each receive a pair of genuine
crocs beach shoes valued at R400.
