The ASP’s Women’s World Qualifying Series stepped out in brilliant form on Tuesday with smooth wave faces of five- to eight-feet and famous Hawaiian sunny skies, the perfect welcome for two South African surfers in among the world’s talent on show.
The women’s Reef Hawaiian Pro got underway on Monday with trials heats that determined the twelve ladies to advance into the main seeded round, and moving through was South Africa’s Nikita Robb, who did well to place in third in the five-way heat in her round of 44 to progress.
Robb only caught four waves, but the five judges were happy enough to place her third, with a best wave score of 5.5 for an overall average of 8.67, good enough to progress.
Unfortunately for South Africa, Robb finds herself in a second-round heat which includes SA’s only Women’s World Tour contender, Roseanne Hodge, who will be keen to pick up some much needed points to regain contention for the World Tour’s 2008 season.
Robb is currently ranked a few places ahead of Hodge on the World Qualifying Series log, with 5215 points in fifteenth position, against Hodge’s 4355 points for her 22nd place. Also in the second round heat on Wednesday is Australia’s Chelsea Hedges, and Courtney Conlogue of the USA.
Reef, new sponsors of the Hawaiian Pro, were happy with the talent on offer. "What an incredible first day,"said PJ O’Connell, Marketing Director for the brand. "It’s amazing, everyone’s smiling, just so happy. It’s pretty hard to go wrong on a day like today."
The $740,000 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing consists of the Reef Hawaiian Pro, Haleiwa, the O’Neill World Cup of Surfing, Sunset Beach, and Billabong Pro Maui, Honolua Bay, Maui.
In addition to $740,000 in prize money, the Vans Triple Crown champion will receive a limited edition $25,000 Chevy Colorado truck.
