Ruth Chepngetich Defends Nagoya Women’s Marathon Title

Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich successfully defended her Nagoya Women’s Marathon title, winning the women-only World Athletics Platinum Label road race on Sunday, 12 March 2023.

The 28-year-old ran her way to victory alone in a time of 2:18:08. She won the race more than three minutes ahead of Japan’s Ayuko Suzuki, who clocked a time of 2:21:52.

Suzuki was followed by her countrymate Henami Maeda in third place with a time of 2:22:32.

Chepngetich led from the start of the race running ahead of the pacemakers, although she slowed down at 35 kilometers, the Kenyan still claimed the victory.  Her victory of 2:18:08 saw her walk away with the largest first place prize money in a marathon running – a sum of US$250 000 (a sum of R4 479 510 in South African Rands).

“I am so happy to have confirmed my title once again at Nagoya Women’s Marathon,” said in an Instagram post.
