SA Surges Ahead in Medal Count

 
Team SA's Chess ladies get down to it during the 9th All Africa Games in Algiers.
 
The fourth day of competition at the All Africa Games in Algiers was another success story for Team SA, with the addition of seven Gold medals, and six each in Silver and Bronze, as South Africa’s top men and women athletes seek to better the continent’s best.
 

On the Soccer field, Banyana Banyana beat Ethiopia 3-1 to progress to meet Ghana in the tournament’s semi-finals, while the Fencing specialists Rachel Barlow, Natasha Tychler and Shih-ya Haung took Bronze in the team event.
 
In Weightlifting, Portia Vries finished second for Silver in the 48kgs Snatch category, and followed that up with a bronze medal in the 48kgs Overall and Clean & Jerk categories, making it three medals in the day for Vries.
 
In the 120km Road Cycling event, both Yolande du Toit and the women’s cycling team each won Gold, while Marissa van der Merwe (Silver) an Lynette Burger (Bronze) heaping up the cycling medals haul.
 
In the endurance Equestrian event, G.D. Kotze, Corrie van Niekerk, Naomi Muller and Thia van Niekerk combined for another Silver medal, while the Chess ladies flexed their minds to a 2 ½ to 1 ½ victory over Nigeria.
