gsport … for Girls! is thrilled to read that the South African Open Tennis Tournament is to be revived after 13 years, since last being staged in Sun City during 1994.

The event is to be re-launched at Durban’s Westridge Stadium from January 22 to 28 as a Challenger tournament on the ATP circuit.

It is reported that the tournament will boast R900 000 overall in prize money, with a winners’ cheque in the region of R140 000.

"And this is only the beginning of a widespread programme to rejuvenate the sport in this country," said sponsors SA Airways’ CEO Khaya Ngqula.

Negotiations are already at an advanced stage to acquire a tournament on the main ATP circuit in 2008 and bring out some of the world’s finest players to South Africa."
